Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristalis Sotomayor.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico on September 14, 1998. My father is a saxophonist and he started me on the music when I was 4 Year’s old. When I turned 6 I started taking music on a music school called “Escuela Libre de Musica Antonio Paoli” in Caguas, Puerto Rico. When I turned 9 I had the opportunity to play as a soloist with the Puerto Rican Symphony Orchestra. At the age of 13 I won a scholarship for the summer camp “Luzerne Music Center” and I participated on the solo competition and got the first place to play as a soloist with the orchestra.
At 14 I auditioned to enter as a former student to Berklee College of Music and got admitted with a full tuition scholarship. Currently I am taking my last year at Berklee majoring in Performance and Music education. In Berklee I have played with many different artists from different parts of the world, Kurt Elling, and “Piraña” from Spain. On August 2018 I had the opportunity to play with two amazing musicians from Berklee, Max Holm, and Volt Witchuporn.
Please tell us about your art.
I play the flute. I am always very thankful for my dad for teaching me Music. Music is my world.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Music helps me to have moments of peace and relaxation. Like all the things we do in life, we need to do it with all the love and with responsibility but in my case, which is the music, I considered that us like musicians, have the opportunity to bring people peace and transmit love with our music. This is why the music is a universal language because it brings people together, to listen and enjoy our art, music. This is why I love what I do.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have a YouTube channel called Kristalis Sotomayor with many different videos.
